Adolescent Girls Program

Menstrual hygiene and management

A cornerstone of this year’s efforts was addressing menstrual hygiene and management, a critical barrier to the education of rural girls.

The program trained 50 in-school girls and 10 out-of-school girls between 11 to 18 years from villages and a local primary school to produce reusable sanitary pads, empowering them with a sustainable solution to manage their hygiene. This training was complemented by sensitization sessions that challenged cultural taboos surrounding menstruation and encouraged all the girls to normalize speaking about menstruation.

16 Days of Activism

During the 16 Days of Activism, the Motherly Heart Organization participated in the Regional Youth Leaders Symposium on Gender-Based Violence, Shelter Policy, and Sustainability, organized by YALI.

Educated both boys and girls in schools and communities about gender-based violence and all forms of violence that endanger their lives and education. We emphasized human rights for girls and promoted equal gender roles and responsibilities for both boys and girls. Boys were encouraged to become allies in supporting girls’ education and ending violence against girls in schools and communities.

Girls Safe Space Clubs

We launched three dynamic girls' clubs with a mission to empower both out-of-school girls and those currently enrolled in school within our community.

These clubs were strategically established in rural villages to foster independence among girls in these areas, encouraging them to remain in school while inspiring out-of-school teenage girls to return to their education. In rural settings, it often takes girls two to five minutes to muster the confidence to introduce themselves in public or to their peers. Many struggle with shyness and lack the self-assurance needed to voice their concerns, which is crucial for thriving in today's competitive world.

Each club has successfully enrolled 20 girls, positively impacting a total of 60 by equipping them with essential life skills and instilling a deep appreciation for the value of education. Through these clubs, the girls have engaged in meaningful exchanges, honed their public speaking skills, and formed a robust support network with peers who share their aspirations. Additionally, they have embraced enriching life experiences that contribute to their personal growth and well-being.
